The German Marshall Fund is a thought leader on issues critical to transatlantic interests in the 21st century, including the future of democracy, security and geopolitics, alliances and the rise of China, and technology and innovation. By drawing on and fostering a community of people with diverse life experiences and political perspectives, GMF pursues its mission by driving the policy debate through cutting-edge analysis and convening, fortifying civil society, and cultivating the next generation of leaders on both sides of the Atlantic.
At GMF, we acknowledge that diversity, equity, and inclusion touches on all aspects of our workplace. As such, employees at all levels of the organization are accountable for incorporating inclusive practices, equitable principles, and championing diversity in their work.
Hub Summary
The Geostrategy Hub is GMF’s largest hub, comprising 80+ GMF programmatic, administrative staff and fellows combined. The hub provides decisionmakers, policymakers and business leaders on both sides of the Atlantic with the most in-depth and comprehensive analysis on the political, economic, and strategic trends impacting them. With the international environment being increasingly defined by geopolitical competition, the environmental crisis, and hybrid threats, managing these risks requires adopting a geostrategy, i.e. the holistic and cross-functional integration of (geo)political risk management into broader strategies, resiliency plans and policy planning.
Within this framework, the aim of the Geostrategy Hub is threefold:
Near-term - Offer abetter understanding of the current geopolitical and geoeconomics events by providing quick and well-informed analysis of sudden shifts in the strategic environment.
Longer-term - Anticipate risks (political, geopolitical and geoeconomics) and identify longer-term trends, and how they might impact strategies of governments and business, and provide recommendations for managing political risks and mitigating their impact.
Innovation - Elaborate a new vision for transatlantic cooperation to address and manage these risks.
The Geostrategy Hub is structured as a multigeographic (4 regional sub-hubs), cross-functional (through the 5th sub-hub) and cross-office hub:
Eastern Europe & Russia
South & Mediterranean
North & Artic
IndoPacific
Geopolitical Risk
The Geostrategy Hub comprises staff from the Paris office, the Warsaw office, the Brussels office, the Berlin office, the Ankara office and the Washington DC office.
The Geostrategy Hub will be consistent with broader GMF vision and goals and actively collaborate with the other Hubs:
Strategic Engagement Hub - to design the best communications, convening and editorial strategy,
Enterprise Hub - to develop the most efficient fundraising strategy,
Democracy Hub - by connecting it to the relevant Eastern & Russia sub-hub projects,
Innovation Hub – by creating synergies on the technological and environmental risks.
Work Stream Summary
The Indo-Pacific increasingly tops the foreign policy agenda in both the US and Europe. At a time when the international rules-based order is increasingly contested, GMF’s Indo Pacific Program fosters coordinated US-European approaches to common challenges in the region while building closer US-European-Asian partnerships. Through its long-standing, signature trilateral Track 1.5 dialogues with stakeholders from China, India, Japan, and Taiwan, the Indo Pacific Program promotes cross-fertilization of ideas and potential policy solutions in key foreign, economic, and security policy areas. As the United States continues coalition-building in the region and Europe is developing its own Indo-Pacific strategies, GMF Indo Pacific’s insights and networks have never been more vital and relevant. The Indo Pacific Program’s fellows and staff manage an active set of policy programs, conduct in-depth research, publish regular newsletters and podcasts, and frequently contribute articles and commentary to a wide range of international publications and news outlets.
